Menu of Menus

Last week, I was able to attend the 15th annual Houston Press Menu of Menus Extravaganza. The extravaganza was held at the massive silver street station. Houston Press has built a platform that offers unlimited food samples from over 40 of Houston’s top restaurants along with wine, beer and cocktail pairings.  Menu of Menus truly shows how diverse Houston’s food scene is. There was Italian, Mexican, Japanese,Greek South African, Cajun Brazilian and American foods.  They even had an Iron fork competition putting two of Houston’s top chefs against each other in a cook-off. Some of the restaurants at Menu of Menus were Prestige Oyster’s Inc., Niko Nikos, Krisp Bird and Batter, Hughie’s Tarvan & Vietnamese, Fajita Pete’s, Casian King, Shipleys , Season 52. Some of my favorite restaurants were Los Cucos Mexican Café with their chicken and beef quesadilla, Krisp Bird and Batter serving chicken and biscuits drenched in spicy ranch sauce, Trahan’s Wings and Daiquiris with their spicy Hurricane Katrina wings, Peli Peli serving their South African oxtails, and Italiano’s Restaurant with their wine and pasta. The best drink in my opinion came from Blue Chair Bay; their new vanilla and key lime pie flavored rum taste amazing. For dessert I loved delicious cold treats from SweetRide! They are the only alcoholic and non-alcoholic gourmet Ice Cream, Sorbet, Italian Ice and Sno-Cone truck in Houston. Overall this was a foodie’s playground and I look forward to next year. Thanks again Mrs. Sexton for the tickets it was truly a great experience. I have provided pictures down below along with a link to Menu of Menus and the restaurants. Chef’s Night Out

On November 17, 2016, I was invited to attend the 2nd annual Chef’s Night Out presented by Modern Luxury Interior Texas.  The event was held at the marvelous Cosentino Center in Houston. Upon entering the venue we heard the rhythmic sounds of Dj Rogelio of Lewis Grell “LG Entertainment and Production LLC.” Chef’s night out allowed Four International Interior Design Association professionals from Houston to join forces with four of Houston top chefs to create the best dish of the night. The Pairs were Louise Nicholson Carter of Skyline Art Services & Chef Harold Wong of The Fish featuring their Golden Beet baked in soil, In-house made yogurt, Red Quinoa and Arugula. Next was Kelie Mayfield of Mars Culture & Chef Arturo Ostorio of Amerigo’s Grille with Polpo; a Charred Octopus, with radish, pickled vegetables and citrus. “This dish was so good I never knew octopus tasted like chicken. My motto when it comes to food is don’t knock it till you try it.” Manuel Navarro of Ziegler Cooper & Chef Ivan Ortiz of Cafeza served smoked pulled rabbit and charred rabit skin wrapped in nopal, set on a yucca chip in a bed of cornmeal and mesquite salt sand, and garnished with crushed sumac berries and elote flowers. “This dish was my favorite I loved the rabbit.” Last was Marilyn Archer of Gensler & Chef Jose Hernandez of Radio Milano they  served a dessert dish; a Chocolate Folie Gras Parfait featuring hazelnut meringue with chocolate truffle, caramel drizzle ice cream on top of a salted pretzel.  For drinks we had champagne, wine, Agua Fresca and Southside Royal from Hidrick’s Gin. We even sampled the smooth taste of Glenfiddich Scotch. Towards the end of the night we voted on who made the best dish. Overall it was a very tasteful night and I am looking forward to next year’s Chef’s night out. Thanks to Modern Luxury Interior Texas for inviting me. Next Up

On November 16, 2016, I was given the opportunity to attend Next Up presented by NextSeed. The event was held at the marvelous Hughes Manor. This venue is so spacious with its two open concept building structures and large outdoor green space. The Next Up event gave up and coming restaurateurs, food trucks and businesses a chance to pitch there foods and business plans to some of the top restaurateurs and entrepreneurs in Houston’s food scene. “Just like on Shark Tank.” The Presenters were Awesome Bites who’s reinventing the the way we make muffins. They are allergy friendly and made with fruits and vegetables instead of sugar and milk. Second was Craft Burger Food truck showcasing its gourmet burgers made from all natural beef and pork, free range chicken and fresh salmon. Next was Dim Sum Bento with their big on flavor, MSG free, always fresh, bite sized dumplings. Lastly was Seaside Poke with is handcrafted taste of the Atlantic sushi bowls. The panelist dug into business plans asked questions about the foods, margins and sales. Sometimes offering advice on how to take a business to the next level or explaining why a certain business may just be a fad. The panelist consisted of Roveen Abante of Lincoln Bar and Virtue & Vice, Jonathan Horowitz with Legacy Restaurant Group, Thomas Nyguyen of Peli Peli Restaurant Group, Kiran Verma with Kiran Restaurant & Bar and Rassul Zarinfar of Buffalo Bayou Brewery. At the end of the night we were allowed to vote and taste all of the foods from the different contenders. Overall, I really enjoyed the Next Up event and look forward to more events from NextSeed. There are pictures at the bottom for your viewing pleasure and if you like comment and subscribe.
